Ban Ki-moon highlights the responsibility of European states in the face of the refugee crisis

25 September 2015

The Secretary General has spoken with the heads of state of Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia to discuss the arrival of refugees and migrants in Europe.

In recognition of the challenges this poses for some of the Member States, Ban Ki-moon has underlined the individual and collective responsibility of European countries to react humanely to the crisis. In addition, he insisted that the majority of people who arrive at the borders of Europe are fleeing war and violence and therefore have the right to request asylum without any type of discrimination.

The UN chief praised the inspiring examples of solidarity shown by civilians across Europe. He reminded the leaders that their rejection of xenophobia, discrimination and violence against migrants and refugees in Europe is fundamental.

As part of the adoption of the new development agenda, Ban invited heads of state to a high-level meeting on migration and refugees to be held in New York on September 30.
