Frankfurt city hall chief reprimands landings in the marginal hours

Frankfurt Airport is seeing more take-offs and landings again. That also pleases the town hall chief, as he says. Peter Feldmann is less pleased with the use of the Nordwestbahn.

Approach: Frankfurt Airport will be approached a little more often after the Corona break

Dhe Mayor of Frankfurt Peter Feldmann (SPD) is pleased that the traffic figures at Frankfurt Airport are slowly increasing again. At the same time, he criticized on Monday that the northwest runway should now be used again, especially in the hours at the edge of the night. The airport is an important employer and an important economic factor. But the Covid 19 pandemic, with the result of a significantly lower number of flights and less noise, also opens up the chance that the airport, the city of Frankfurt and the region will find a better relationship.

The use of the northwest runway, which has now started again in the sensitive hours at the edge of the night, does not serve this goal, Feldmann continued. The Frankfurt city government is sticking to the goal that the flight movements should not increase, but decrease during this time. The mayor added that he was personally in favor of a night flight ban between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Slump in demand as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic

The airport operator Fraport AG published the traffic figures for June on Monday. According to this, Frankfurt Airport counted 599,314 passengers, a decrease of 90.9 percent compared to the same month last year. Cumulative over the first half of 2020, the decrease in the number of passengers at Germany’s largest airport was 63.8 percent. The development is still due to the travel restrictions and the collapse in demand as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Accordingly, the lifting of the travel warning for 31 European countries in mid-June and the renewed expansion of the flight offer towards the end of the month led to a slight increase in passenger traffic in Frankfurt. In May the year-on-year decline was 95.6 percent.

The number of flight movements in June was 9,331 take-offs and landings, 79.7 percent below the previous year’s figure. In the entire first half of the year, Frankfurt Airport recorded 118,693 flight movements, a decrease of 53 percent. The cargo volume in June fell by only 16.5 percent to 145,562 tons. Calculated over the first half of the year, the loss of 912,396 tons was 14.4 percent.
