More flights, but again fewer passengers

After the end of the summer holidays, Frankfurt Airport is feeling less buoyant again. The gap in the number of passengers compared to the corresponding week of the previous year is still very large.

Decline: After the end of the summer vacation, Frankfurt Airport is counting fewer passengers than before

Dhe passenger numbers at Frankfurt Airport suffered a setback as they recovered from the Corona low. After the end of the Hessian summer vacation, the airport operator Fraport counted 330,428 passengers at Germany’s largest airport in the week from August 17 to 24, 78.7 percent fewer than in the corresponding calendar week a year earlier, as the company announced on Tuesday in Frankfurt . That was around 23,000 fewer passengers than in the previous week, when the year-on-year decline was 77.3 percent.

The number of flight movements fell by 62.6 percent to 3949 take-offs and landings compared to the corresponding calendar week of the previous year. The volume of freight and airmail fell by 12.3 percent to 33,905 tons, after the year-on-year decline in the previous week was 13.7 percent.

Many airlines have been offering more flights again since June after passenger traffic had largely collapsed due to global travel restrictions since the end of March. Since June 15, the Federal Foreign Office has lifted travel warnings for most EU member states, the Schengen area and Great Britain.

However, there are now travel warnings again for certain regions, including mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, parts of Croatia, the city of Paris and the Côte d’Azur. Industry representatives expect that passenger traffic will only return to the level from before the coronavirus pandemic in a few years.
