In April, flights will stop from Bratislava, the airport will have a break

MR Štefánik Airport in Bratislava will be closed from 21 April to 1 May. The reason is the reconstruction of the runway junction.

During this period, no flights will take place at Bratislava Airport. A spokeswoman for Bratislava Airport, Veronika Ševčíková, said that about it air carriers have been informed in advance and flights for a given period do not sell.

Both airport runways (runway 04-22 and runway 13-31) were restored in the 1980s with a lifespan of approximately 30 years. Ševčíková explained that they are now demanding it reconstruction, which the airport is gradually carrying out in stages for the fourth year behind. While in recent years, part of one of the runways has always been reconstructed with the operation of flights from the second runway, from 21 April to 1 May this year it is planned to reconstruct the part of the runway where both take-offs tracks cross. Therefore, the airport will be closed for all arrivals and departures. Only heliports and the check-in area will remain in operation.

“Airlines that operate regularly and irregularly charter flights, have been informed of that conclusion with sufficient in advance. Therefore, they do not offer during the given 11 days no flights from Bratislava, “stated the General Director of MR Airport Štefánika Jozef Pojedinec.

Reconstruction of the railway junction will be carried out in three stages. In the week from 13 to 20 April, preparatory work will be carried out on runway 04-22, which will include demolition cement-concrete slabs. During that period, the airport will be closed at six o’clock at night, which, however, regular flights does not affect.

According to the spokesperson, the reconstruction of the railway junction itself will begin April 21 at 10 a.m. and will last until May 1 until 6 p.m. During airport closures during the period will take place at the intersection runways demolition work, removal of cement-concrete cover, cutting boards, laying a new cement-concrete cover, installation axial lighting or spraying of day markings. During this period, the no flights at the airport, proper operation at the airport (arrivals and departures) will start after 18 hours, when, for example, a departure to Moscow carrier Pobeda and other flights. In the final third stage at the end May, asphalt joints will be completed during the night changes watering, which, however, will no longer affect scheduled flights.
