Secretary General Ban Ki-moon highlighted the important role that the World Bank plays in the implementation of the new development agenda for the year 2030, noting that it could “boost capacity building and resource mobilization for sustainable development thanks to his extensive technical experience ”.

Ban is currently in Lima, Peru, to participate in the Annual Meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

In his speech during the World Bank Development Committee meeting, he emphasized that the new agenda addresses the “structural factors that have hindered the eradication of poverty, inclusive growth and sustainable development.”

“The World Bank plays a critical role in economic empowerment, sustainable agriculture and infrastructure, fighting hunger and climate change, building resilience, and promoting effective governance and the rule of law,” said the Head of the UN.

Ban said it is more important than ever for the World Bank and the United Nations to work with the other international and regional institutions to create teams that can tackle important problems.

The Secretary General met with the President of the World Bank, Jim Yong Kim. The two leaders exchanged their perspectives on various issues, including gender equality, water and sanitation, and agreed to collaborate closely on the adoption of the SDGs.
