Italians will have a tax on plastic packaging and sweetened drinks

Italian MEPs have approved the country’s budget for next year, which avoids a significant increase in sales tax, but introduces new taxes.

The budget law approved by the lower house of Italy Parliament, has previously been approved by the country’s senate. The main goal of the Italian government was to avoid the planned increase in sales tax, which would be negative affected the country’s troubled economy. However, the budget introduces taxes from sweetened beverages and plastic packaging.

The country’s government hoped to gain more through new taxes finance, but both original proposals have eased following Italian protests entrepreneurs. The so – called plastic tax has been reduced from 1 euro per kilogram to an amount of EUR 0.45 per kilogram. It is to apply from July 2020. The tax of of sweetened soft drinks deputies confirmed at the level of 10 cents on liter, but its application is postponed from July next year to October.
