The president of the House of Representatives in Libya, Agila Saleh Essa Gwaider, declared today at the UN that his country supports international efforts to reduce the risks faced by illegal migrants in the Mediterranean, provided that international law and sovereignty are respected. of Libya.

In addition, he noted that the humanitarian crisis must be addressed in a comprehensive way and with the participation of countries of origin, transit and destination, adding that a security approach is not enough to stop the illegal trafficking of people.

“Libya believes that using force against smugglers’ boats off the coast of Libya may increase the complexity of the crisis in the country and will not contribute to reducing the illegal smuggling of migrants. This can only be achieved by giving the legitimate Libyan government the means to expand its authority over the territory and control its borders, ”said the Libyan representative.

He also highlighted the need to provide the Libyan army with the necessary means and training, and warned that any foreign military activity in Libyan territorial waters or in the exclusive economic zone, would harm fishing activities and lead to the looting of marine resources.
