President of Ecuador asks rich countries to evaluate their economic model

27 September 2015

The president of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, urged the main economies of the planet to spend less time diagnosing the underdevelopment of the countries of the South and more time questioning their own development model

Speaking today before the plenary session of the United Nations Summit on Sustainable Development, the Ecuadorian leader considered that corrections should be made on the way to that goal.

“Alternatives to development must be built before development alternatives, we must build societies with markets, rather than market societies, since we must assume that the dominant forms of production and consumption are not viable, that they ignore the eco-systemic limits and seek growth. and infinite accumulation ”.

Correa stated that in his country development is understood as the achievement of good living, in peace and in harmony with nature, and in that sense he stated that he was pleased that the SDGs take care of the planet very much in mind.

On the other hand, he stressed the need for a development agenda with a rights-based approach where human mobility is not criminalized and people are deprived of their fundamental rights.

In that sense, he described the absence of a direct objective on human mobility as an unfortunate omission in the agenda approved on Friday.

The Ecuadorian president said that for his government there are no illegal human beings and stressed that the UN should insist on that point. He also considered that the immigration policies of rich countries are shameful.
