A defining characteristic of the 2030 Agenda is the determination not to leave anyone behind, said the director of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) on Tuesday, during the Regional Conference on Social Development in Latin America and the Caribbean, a meeting of three days that runs until November 4 in Lima, Peru.

“We must work together to identify and address the entrenched determinants of exclusion, in this region and beyond. Poverty eradication will only be achieved if we truly invest in people, ”said Helen Clark.

According to the UN, after a decade of fervent growth, which amounted to some 92 million people to the middle class, Latin America is facing a slowdown and some segments of the population could fall back into poverty.

Conference participants discuss how to make the newly agreed Sustainable Development Goals a reality, which the UN says require new approaches to address complex challenges such as exclusion and inequality.

According to a UNDP report yet to be published, women are disproportionately affected. About 35 percent of poor people live in female-headed households.
